Kathmandu Helicopter Tour: Prices, Landings & Expert Tips

Most people who look into a helicopter tour from Kathmandu share the same problem! They want the Himalaya, but not 12 days of walking to reach it. What if we tell you that one morning can solve it?
Here’s the thing, though: the tours differ in price, flight time and where the helicopter actually lands.
Also, note that the helicopter sightseeing over Kathmandu city itself is not possible, so every tour below starts in Kathmandu and heads for the mountains. At Namche Heli Service, we fly these routes ourselves, so we have kept this guide practical!
Which Helicopter Tour from Kathmandu Suits You?
We offer eight routes (more is customizable upon request) and the best one depends on your time, budget and comfort with altitude.
Prices are starting rates in USD, per person on a shared seat or per aircraft on a private charter. Very important to understand is that each helicopter carries 4 to 5 passengers, depending on weight.
| Tour | Time | Shared seat | Private charter | Who should opt for this |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour | 4 to 5 hrs | 1,199 | 5,000 | First-timers who want Everest in one morning |
| Everest Helicopter Tour | 4 to 5 hrs | On request | On request | Travelers who want the Kala Patthar landing as their highlight |
| Helicopter Tour in Nepal | One day | On request | On request | Undecided travelers who want us to match a route to their dates |
| Langtang Helicopter Tour | About 2 hrs | 600 | 2,200 | Budget travelers with one free morning |
| Gokyo Lake Helicopter Tour | 3 to 4 hrs | 1,100 | 4,800 | Photographers who prefer turquoise lakes and quieter views |
| Annapurna Base Camp Helicopter Tour | 2 to 3 hrs (from Pokhara) | 600 | 2,500 | Travelers already based in Pokhara |
| Manaslu Helicopter Charter | 3 hrs | 1,150 | 3,500 | Travelers who want a giant peak without the long drive |
| Muktinath Helicopter Tour | About 4 hrs | 750 (Pokhara) | 4,000 | Pilgrims and families visiting a sacred site |
Most travelers ask for Everest first! Our Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is the full version, with an early start, a Lukla refuel and a Khumbu flyover.
How Long Each Tour Lasts and What the Day Looks Like
Most tours take 2 to 5 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. Langtang and Annapurna sit at the short end. Everest and Muktinath from Kathmandu run longest!
An Everest morning follows a steady rhythm. We collect you around 5:30 AM, and the helicopter lifts off about an hour later.
The pilot refuels at Lukla (2,860 m), then flies up the Khumbu valley past Namche, Tengboche and Pheriche. After a short landing, many flights stop at Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for breakfast. You are back in Kathmandu around 10:30 AM!
Why so early? Mountain winds rise after midday, and cloud builds fast. A morning departure gives you the clearest sky and the calmest air.
Altitude deserves respect, too. You climb from 1,400 m in Kathmandu to well above 3,800 m in under two hours.
After serving thousands of guests at Namche Heli Service, we found that mountain sickness risk climbs far more steeply after flying up than after walking up. Because of this, landings stay short (usually 10 to 15 minutes at the highest points), and oxygen support comes with the flight.
So, drink plenty of water the day before, skip alcohol the night before, and tell the pilot at once if a headache starts!
Booking, Landings and Permits Before You Pay
Booking takes four details: your dates, passenger count, passport information and body weights.
Weight matters because thin air limits what the helicopter can lift, so the pilot plans the load around it. We take 50% to confirm your seat and the balance at least 24 hours before departure.
Landings need a question. Everest Base Camp sits on a moving glacier, so no tour lands there. At the moment, shared Everest flights stop at Pheriche (about 4,200 m) and Everest View Hotel.
A Kala Patthar landing (5,545 m) is limited to private charters. Rules shift between seasons, so always ask which landings your seat includes. We are happy to answer all your questions!
Everest flights also need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit, at NPR 3,000 each.
Well, our team at Namche Heli Service arranges both, so you only send passport details. Manaslu adds a restricted area permit, which we handle as well (for Manaslu helicopter tours).
Weather has the final say. If we cancel for safety, you choose a full refund or a new date. However, you have to cancel yourself 7 or more days ahead for a 90% refund, or 3 to 6 days ahead for 50%.
Build in one spare day, especially from March to May and September to November, when demand peaks and mornings run clearest. June to August brings cloud and the most delays. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is strongly advised!
What to Wear and Carry on a Helicopter Tour?
Pack light, because the helicopter does. Each passenger gets about 10 to 15 kg including hand luggage, and soft duffel bags load more easily than hard suitcases. Leave your main bag at the hotel.
Kathmandu may feel mild at 6 AM, yet a landing above 3,800 m feels cold and windy. So, dress in layers:
- A thermal base layer and a fleece
- A down jacket and windproof trousers
- Sturdy closed shoes, because the ground is rocky or snowy
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and gloves
- A spare camera battery (cold drains them fast), a water bottle and your passport copy
No trekking experience is needed, which is why families and older travelers choose these flights. However, if you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking.
Adding a Short Trek? Fly Back by Helicopter
We understand that some travelers want a little trail with their flight. In that case, we offer an Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return, which lets you walk up and skip the long walk down.
From the high camps, a Gorakhep to Kathmandu Helicopter flight returns you to the capital in one go. A Gorakshep to Lukla Helicopter hop suits you if you plan to continue by plane.
Trekkers who stop lower can book a Phireche to Lukla Helicopter or a Phireche to Kathmandu Helicopter flight instead.
Or are you planning to finish at Lukla? If so, a Lukla to Kathmandu Helicopter flight skips the long Ramechhap road. Without any trekking, our round trip called Kathmandu to Lukla to Kathmandu Helicopter gives you a Sherpa-country morning.
Well, those were all the packages we offer starting Kathmandu from Namche Heli Service! If you’re interested, all you need to do is book a trip with us and you’re ready to go!
