The Gokyo Lake Helicopter Tour is a luxury aerial excursion that takes you directly to the high-altitude Gokyo Valley in the Everest region. Unlike trekking for weeks, this tour allows you to reach the sacred turquoise lakes and witness the world’s highest peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, in just a few hours. The flight typically lands at Gokyo (4,790m) for breakfast and sightseeing, providing a serene and less crowded alternative to the standard Base Camp itinerary.
The total duration of the tour is approximately 3 to 4 hours starting from Kathmandu. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes about 45 minutes for refueling. From Lukla, it is another 25-minute flight to the Gokyo Valley. You generally get 30 to 45 minutes of ground time at the lakes to take photos and enjoy a meal. The return flight follows the same path, totaling a half-day experience that concludes by mid-morning.
The best windows for the Gokyo Lake tour are during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the sky is generally crystal clear, providing unobstructed views of the Himalayas. The lakes are at their most vibrant blue during these times. While winter tours are possible and offer crisp views, the lakes may be frozen, and the temperatures at Gokyo can be extremely cold, often dropping well below freezing.
Yes, there is a minor risk because you are flying from Kathmandu (1,400m) to Gokyo (4,790m) very quickly. Because you only stay at the high altitude for 30 to 60 minutes, most healthy individuals do not experience severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). However, you may feel slight shortness of breath or a light headache. Our pilots are trained to monitor passengers closely, and the helicopters are equipped with supplemental oxygen cylinders to assist anyone feeling significant discomfort.
The primary highlight is the bird’s-eye view of the six emerald-green Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas. You also get an incredible “wall-to-wall” view of the Himalayan range. Landing at the shores of the third lake (Dudh Pokhari) allows you to experience the spiritual stillness of the mountains and see the iconic Gokyo Ri peak. The flight path also offers a unique perspective of the Sherpa culture and remote high-altitude settlements.
Layering is essential for this trip. Even if it is warm in Kathmandu, it will be freezing at 4,800 meters. Wear a heavy down jacket, windproof trousers, and sturdy boots. Don’t forget high-quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense snow glare, and apply high-SPF sunscreen. Carry a camera with extra batteries (cold drains them faster), a bottle of water, and some light snacks. You don’t need a heavy backpack since you won’t be trekking.
A standard Airbus H125 helicopter can accommodate up to 5 passengers plus the pilot, depending on the total weight. However, due to the high altitude and thin air at Gokyo, there are strict weight limitations. If the total weight of the group exceeds 400–450kg, the helicopter may need to perform a “shuttle” from a lower point like Syangboche or Pheriche, taking 2 or 3 people at a time to ensure a safe landing and takeoff.
Landing is subject to weather conditions and wind speeds. While we aim to land at the Gokyo village lakeside, the pilot makes the final decision based on safety. High winds or sudden fog can occasionally prevent a landing. In such rare cases, the pilot will provide an extended mountain flight to ensure you still see the lakes and Everest from the air. Safety is always the absolute priority over the itinerary.
The EBC tour focuses on the Khumbu Glacier and the iconic base camp used by climbers. In contrast, the Gokyo tour offers a more aesthetic and tranquil experience. Many travelers find the Gokyo Lakes more visually stunning than the rocky terrain of Base Camp. Additionally, the Gokyo region is generally quieter with fewer people, making it a better choice for those seeking a peaceful, spiritual connection with the mountains rather than the “busy” atmosphere of the EBC route.
One of the greatest advantages of the helicopter tour is its accessibility. Since there is no trekking involved, people of all ages and varying levels of physical fitness can enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas. However, if you have pre-existing heart or lung conditions, we strongly recommend consulting a doctor first due to the rapid change in altitude. Our staff is experienced in assisting passengers with limited mobility to ensure they can board and exit the aircraft safely.
We decided to fly by helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu. This avoided having to walk to Lukla and then having a long bumpy ride from Ramechhap airport back into Kathmandu. Also then we could get a flight from Kathmandu airport to Pokhara. All the arrangements were made by Easy Flight Travel. We were escorted up to the helipad and helped into the helicopter. I would definitely recommend Easy Flight Travel to anyone wanting to organise travel from Namche Bazaar
Raju from Easy Flight Travel is honest reliable and very friendly to deal with.
You can trust him to arrange a flight, recommend a hotel, or carry out safe honest mony change. What he agrees to will happen.
Highly recommended.
Raju was efficient and helpful in booking our helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu and our flight onto Pokhara. He was there in the morning to escort us and to carry a pack up to the helicopter pad. The flight was delayed, but he waited with us and was in contact with the company, checking on when the flight would arrive.
