Kathmandu to Lukla Helicopter Cost Guide With 2026/27 Rates

The price of the Kathmandu to Lukla helicopter depends largely on a single choice: shared seat or full private charter.
Our team at Namche Heli Service provides shared seats from $500 per person and private charters from $2,500 with a maximum of 5 passengers.
The flight takes about 45 minutes and skips the long drive to Ramechhap. This guide explains what shapes the price, what to expect on board, and when the helicopter beats the plane!
Kathmandu to Lukla Helicopter Cost in 2026/27
Prices vary by season, demand and fuel. Across the market, shared seats usually run USD 450 to 650 per person, while private charters run USD 2,500 to 3,500 per helicopter.
Our rates at Namche Heli Service sit at the lower end of both ranges:
| Option | Price | Best for |
| Shared seat | From USD 500 per person | Solo trekkers and couples |
| Private charter | From USD 2,500 per helicopter | Families and groups of up to 5 |
A charter often makes sense for groups. Split between 5 people, USD 2,500 comes to USD 500 each, the same as a shared seat.
With 4 people it is USD 625 each, and with 3 it is about USD 833. Therefore, a private flight costs less extra than most travelers expect!
Shared seats depend on filling the helicopter. A shared departure usually needs 4 or 5 passengers, so your departure time may move by a few hours. Ask any operator whether airport fees and fuel surcharges are included in the quote and we’re sure you’ll be satisfied with our answer!
Return trips follow the same logic. Each leg has its own price, so a round trip is quoted as a package. Message us with your dates and we will give you the current rate for both directions!
Helicopter or Plane to Reach Lukla from Kathmandu?
A fixed-wing ticket costs roughly USD 200 to 280 one way. That is less than half the shared helicopter price. However, the ticket price hides some extra costs!
During peak months, most scheduled flights leave from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu. The airport sits about 132 km east of the capital.
That means the drive to Manthali from Kathmandu takes 3.5 to 5 hours, and many of you have to start it around midnight to reach there on time to catch the flight!
On the other hand, helicopters still fly directly from Kathmandu, so you keep a full night in your hotel without having to drive long or stress about missing the flight.
However, neither aircraft is weather-proof, because both fly under visual flight rules. Cloud at Lukla can ground a plane or a helicopter!
Helicopters do have more room to adapt, since pilots can use other helipads in places such as Surke or Phaplu if Lukla closes in for a long period of time (sometimes days to even a week)!
Best Time to Fly and What Happens if the Weather Turns?
The best months for a Kathmandu to Lukla helicopter flight are March to May and September to December, when the skies are clearest!
These are also the months when plane flights get diverted to Ramechhap and prices rise, so the helicopter earns its fare most clearly in this window. Flights also run in winter and during the monsoon (June to August), but only when the weather allows, and we would not build a tight schedule around those months.
Our helicopters fly daily between 06:30 AM and 5:00 PM, weather permitting. If conditions worsen mid-flight, the pilot returns to Kathmandu or lands at a safe helipad such as Surke or Phaplu until the weather clears. And in case a flight is cancelled before departure, we move you to the next clear window!
This flight suits:
- Trekkers with limited time
- Elderly travelers who want to skip the Ramechhap drive
- Photographers who want the aerial view
- Anyone who cannot afford a missed Lukla flight.
The round trip from Kathmandu to Lukla and back takes about 1.5 hours including a brief stop in Lukla, so it also works as a day excursion!
What You Get: Flight Time, Baggage and Departures
Flights leave from the domestic terminal in Kathmandu and land at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla.
The trip takes about 45 minutes in total, and departures run from around 06:30 AM to 5:00 PM, although mornings usually give the clearest air.
On the way, you shall pass terraced hills and then the first snow peaks of the Solu Khumbu region.
Baggage is limited to about 15 kg per person. The helicopter carries roughly 400 to 500 kg in total, so weight matters at Lukla’s altitude. Pack a soft duffel, wear your heaviest jacket on board, and leave spare gear at your Kathmandu hotel.
On a clear day, you can also spot Gauri Shankar and Langtang, and closer to Lukla, peaks such as Ama Dablam and Thamserku.
Return Flights and Helicopter Exits From the Trail
Some travelers book a Kathmandu to Lukla to Kathmandu helicopter trip for a quick out-and-back.
Others fly up by plane and book a Lukla to Kathmandu helicopter flight for the way home. That avoids both the Ramechhap drive and the risk of missing an international flight!
An Everest Base Camp trek with helicopter return works well for trekkers who want the walk up but not the walk down. You can fly out from several points.
Likewise, a Gorakhep to Kathmandu helicopter flight takes you home directly from the top. And Gorakshep to Lukla helicopter hop suits those who prefer a regular flight afterward.
Meanwhile, a Pheriche to Lukla helicopter or Pheriche to Kathmandu helicopter flight helps when altitude or time cuts a trek short. Prices rise with altitude, so ask us for a quote that matches your route.
If you want the views more than the transfer, our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour and Everest helicopter tour fly the Khumbu in a few hours.
Note: Gokyo to Kathmandu helicopter flight works the same way for those finishing the Gokyo Valley trek.
Permits, Altitude and Insurance
A transfer to Lukla alone is simple. Once you start walking toward Namche, you need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit.
For our trek packages at Namche Heli Service, we handle the permits and arrangements where applicable. We also recommend a guide, and our packages include one!
Lukla sits at about 2,850 m, up from 1,400 m in Kathmandu. Most people feel fine there. Even so, the quick gain counts, so drink water, skip alcohol on arrival day, and keep the first walk short.
And very important: check your travel insurance too! Many standard policies exclude helicopter transport and high-altitude evacuation, and a missing clause is far easier to fix before you fly.
