Manaslu Circuit Trek With Helicopter Return

The primary advantage is saving time and avoiding the dusty, road-heavy descent. Traditionally, after crossing the Larkya La Pass (5,106m), trekkers must walk several days through Dharapani and Besisahar, where road construction has marred much of the original trail. A helicopter flight from Samagaun or Bhimthang allows you to skip these monotonous sections, turning a 14-day itinerary into a 10-day one. It also provides an unparalleled aerial perspective of Mt. Manaslu and the surrounding glaciers that you simply cannot get from the ground.

The most common pickup points are Samagaun (3,530m) and Bhimthang (3,720m). Samagaun is the preferred choice for those who wish to see the mountain up close but prefer not to cross the high pass. For those who complete the full circuit, Bhimthang is the logical pickup point after descending from the Larkya La. Occasionally, pickups can be arranged from Samdo or Dharapani, though Samagaun and Bhimthang offer the most scenic takeoff points and the most reliable landing pads for pilots.

Pricing depends on the type of booking. A private charter from Samagaun or Bhimthang to Kathmandu typically costs between $2,800 and $3,500 for the whole helicopter (up to 5 people). If you are looking for a group-joining seat, prices usually range from $600 to $900 per person. Keep in mind that prices can fluctuate based on the season and the availability of helicopters already in the area for rescues, which sometimes allows for “empty leg” discounts.

The helicopters used in this region can carry up to 5 passengers plus the pilot at lower altitudes. However, at the high altitudes of Samagaun or Bhimthang, the “lift” is reduced. Generally, a helicopter can take a full load of five passengers, but if the total weight (passengers + luggage) exceeds roughly 400kg to 450kg, the pilot may need to perform a “shuttle.” Each passenger is typically allowed 15kg of gear, similar to the weight limits for Lukla flights.

The flight is nothing short of spectacular. As you lift off from the Manaslu region, you get a direct face-to-face view of Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) and the sprawling Birendra Lake. You will soar over the massive Larkya Glacier and see the Annapurna Range, including Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal, shimmering in the west. The transition from the stark, high-alpine Tibetan-style landscapes to the lush green valleys and terraced hillsides of central Nepal provides a stunning visual summary of the country’s geography.

Weather is a critical factor. While helicopters can fly in conditions that ground fixed-wing planes, they still require clear visibility (VFR rules). The Manaslu region is prone to afternoon clouds and morning valley fog. Flights are almost always scheduled for the early morning (7:00 AM to 10:00 AM) when the air is stable and the peaks are clear. If a flight is canceled due to weather, it is usually pushed to the next clear window, so having a “buffer day” in your schedule is highly recommended.

Unless you are flying out due to a medical emergency like Altitude Sickness (AMS) or an injury, the flight is considered a “commercial charter” or “convenience flight.” If it is for convenience, travel insurance will not cover the cost. However, if a doctor or your guide determines you are unfit to continue and initiates an evacuation, it becomes a medical rescue. For standard treks, most people book this as a pre-planned luxury to avoid the long walk out, paying out of pocket.

Even if you fly out by helicopter, you still need the full set of permits for the trek. These include the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which requires a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide. You also need the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit if you cross the pass into Bhimthang. Your trekking agency will handle these, but you must have them on your person throughout the journey until you board the helicopter.

Since you will be moving from a cold, high-altitude environment to the warmth of Kathmandu (1,400m) in just 45 minutes, layering is key. Keep your down jacket and sunglasses accessible for the landing and takeoff at Samagaun. However, ensure you have lighter clothes easily reachable once you land in the city. Also, keep your passport and permit documents in your daypack, as you may need to show them at the domestic terminal upon arrival in Kathmandu.

It is possible, but not guaranteed. During peak seasons (October and April), there are many helicopters in the Manaslu and Annapurna regions for rescues and charters. If a helicopter is dropping off a group and has empty seats for the return to Kathmandu, you can often snag a last-minute deal. However, to ensure you don’t get stuck, it is much safer to pre-book through a Kathmandu-based agency that specializes in heli-trekking logistics and can coordinate with other groups.

Helicopter travel in Nepal is generally safe, especially when operated by reputable companies like Simrik Air, Air Dynasty, or Kailash Heli. The pilots flying these routes are often highly experienced in “high-altitude long-line” operations and are among the best in the world. The aircraft (usually B3e Eurocopters) are designed specifically for thin-air environments. However, safety depends on strictly following the pilot’s instructions regarding weight, seating positions, and boarding procedures while the rotors are spinning.

The helicopter return typically shaves 3 to 4 days off the standard 10–12 day itinerary. A sample “Heli-Return” itinerary would look like this: Drive from Kathmandu to Maccha Khola, trek through Jagat, Deng, and Namche, spend two days in Samagaun for acclimatization, cross the Larkya La Pass to Bhimthang, and fly to Kathmandu the next morning. This allows you to experience the most beautiful parts of the trek while skipping the lower-altitude roads that many trekkers find less appealing.
