Kathmandu Valley Tour: offers the opportunity to explore different historical sites around Kathmandu city with an experienced guide. Many monuments across Kathmandu are worth exploring, but they are not doable in a day. Our tour allows us to visit sites listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. You’ll visit Patan Durbar Square, Boudhnath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Swyambhunath Temple.

The tour begins early in the morning and ends in the late evening. The guide will brief you about the monuments, the history surrounding them, the major historical events, and more.

There are more things to explore than we mentioned, but the tight time frame only lets you explore these sites. You can change the itinerary to suit your preferences and combine it with other heritage sites. The Kathmandu Valley Day Tour begins after breakfast. Our tour guide will meet you in your hotel lobby. Depending on the group size, we use a private vehicle to commute between the monuments.

First, you’ll visit Swayambhunath Temple, known as the Monkey Temple. Monkey Temple is on a hilltop, letting you enjoy peace and a fantastic aerial view of Kathmandu. Then, explore one ancient royal residence, Patan Durbar Square. You will witness the palaces, courtyards, shrines, museums, and local markets.

Your next stop is Pashupatinath Temple, a pilgrimage site of enormous importance to Hindus. At last, you’ll visit Boudhanath Stupa, the largest stupa in Nepal. The soft chants and scent of incense in the air there are pure bliss. At the end of the tour, the guide will drop you off at your hotel. If you are happy with their service, please do not forget to tip the guide and the driver.

From Hotel drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the most important historical and cultural landmarks in Nepal, located in the heart of Kathmandu city. Once the royal palace of the Malla and Shah kings, this ancient square showcases a remarkable collection of temples, courtyards, shrines, and traditional Newari architecture. The square reflects centuries of Nepalese art, religion, and royal history, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the Kathmandu Valley.

Visitors to Kathmandu Durbar Square can admire famous monuments such as the Kumari Ghar, the residence of the Living Goddess Kumari, as well as the Hanuman Dhoka Palace and several intricately carved wooden temples. The square is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a vibrant cultural hub where locals gather for festivals, ceremonies, and daily rituals.

Walking through the historic courtyards and narrow streets surrounding the square allows visitors to experience the rich heritage, craftsmanship, and spiritual traditions that have shaped Kathmandu for centuries.

Kathmandu Durbar Square to Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath Temple, also known as the Monkey Temple, is one of the oldest and most sacred religious sites in Nepal. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, the temple offers stunning panoramic views of the city along with a peaceful spiritual atmosphere. The stupa is believed to be over 2,000 years old and holds great significance for both Buddhists and Hindus.

The main structure features a white dome and a golden spire with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides, symbolizing wisdom and awareness. Prayer wheels, colorful prayer flags, and smaller shrines surround the main stupa, creating a vibrant and spiritual environment for visitors and pilgrims.

To reach the temple, visitors climb a long staircase of more than 300 steps, often accompanied by the playful monkeys that inhabit the area. Swayambhunath Temple remains an iconic landmark and a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the cultural heritage of Kathmandu.

Swayambhunath Temple to Bouddhanath Stupa

Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest and most significant Buddhist stupas in the world, located on the eastern side of Kathmandu. This magnificent monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important spiritual center for Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The massive white dome and towering golden spire, adorned with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, symbolize wisdom, compassion, and enlightenment.

The stupa is surrounded by monasteries, prayer wheels, and colorful prayer flags, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere for visitors and pilgrims. Every day, devotees walk clockwise around the stupa while spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras, following an ancient Buddhist tradition.

Boudhanath is not only a place of worship but also a vibrant cultural hub where travelers can observe Buddhist rituals, explore local monasteries, and enjoy traditional Tibetan food in nearby cafes and restaurants. Visiting Boudhanath Stupa offers a peaceful and enriching experience while discovering the spiritual heart of Kathmandu.

Bouddhanath Stupa to Pashupatinath Temple to hotel

Pashupatinath Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world, dedicated to Lord Shiva and located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, Nepal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts thousands of Hindu pilgrims and visitors every year who come to worship and experience its deep spiritual atmosphere.

The main temple features traditional pagoda-style architecture with beautifully carved wooden rafters and a golden roof. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the inner temple, but visitors can explore the surrounding complex, which includes numerous smaller temples, shrines, and ashrams.

One of the most unique aspects of Pashupatinath Temple is the sacred cremation ghats along the Bagmati River, where traditional Hindu funeral ceremonies are performed. The temple area is also home to sadhus, holy men dressed in colorful attire who devote their lives to spiritual practice.

Visiting Pashupatinath provides a powerful insight into Nepal’s religious traditions, culture, and centuries-old spiritual heritage.

FAQ

The Kathmandu Valley is unique for having seven distinct UNESCO sites. You should prioritize the three Durbar Squares (Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur), which showcase the pinnacle of Newari craftsmanship and royal history. For spiritual insight, visit Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world. Finally, Pashupatinath serves as the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal, while Changu Narayan offers a glimpse into the valley’s oldest stone inscriptions. Each site requires at least 2–3 hours to truly appreciate the intricate woodcarvings and religious rituals.

To experience the highlights without feeling rushed, a 3-day itinerary is ideal. On the first day, focus on central Kathmandu and the spiritual hubs of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath. Dedicate the second day to the artistic city of Patan and the sacred Pashupatinath area. The third day should be reserved for the medieval city of Bhaktapur and a scenic drive to Changu Narayan or Nagarkot.

If you are a history buff or photographer, extending your stay to 5 days allows you to explore hidden alleys, local pottery workshops, and traditional Newari kitchens.

While public buses are available and very cheap, they are often crowded and difficult for tourists to navigate. For a comfortable experience, hiring a private car with a driver for the day is the most efficient option, costing roughly $40–$60 depending on the distance. Alternatively, Pathao or Indriver (Nepal’s versions of Uber/Grab) are excellent for short hops on motorbikes or taxis. If you are staying in the city center, walking is the best way to discover the “bahals” (courtyards) and hidden shrines that cars simply cannot reach.

Respectful attire is essential when visiting temples and monasteries. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees; avoid wearing sleeveless tops, short skirts, or revealing shorts. You will often be required to remove your shoes before entering the inner sanctums of temples or private homes. It is also a good idea to carry a light scarf or shawl, which can serve as a quick cover-up. Additionally, remember that leather items (belts, bags) are strictly prohibited inside certain Hindu temples, most notably the main area of Pashupatinath.

Kathmandu offers a tantalizing array of street food, from spicy Pani Puri to the famous Chatamari (Newari pizza). While tempting, travelers should exercise caution to avoid “Delhi Belly.” Stick to vendors who have a high turnover of local customers and ensure that food is cooked fresh and served hot. Avoid drinking tap water or consuming salads washed in it; always opt for bottled or purified water. Trying Momo (dumplings) at a reputable local restaurant is a safer way to enjoy the local cuisine while minimizing the risk of stomach upsets.

For the most spectacular views of the Himalayas surrounding the valley, Nagarkot is the premier destination. Located about 32km from the city, it offers a panoramic view of the Everest and Langtang ranges. If you prefer to stay closer to the city, the top of Swayambhunath Stupa provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Kathmandu skyline, especially as the city lights begin to twinkle at dusk. Kirtipur, a hill-top Newari town, also offers stunning sunset vistas over the valley floor with a backdrop of snow-capped peaks in the winter.

Most major heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley charge an entry fee for foreigners, which helps fund the ongoing restoration following the 2015 earthquake. As of 2026, Bhaktapur Durbar Square remains the most expensive at approximately $15 (1,500 NPR), while Kathmandu and Patan Durbar Squares charge around $10 (1,000 NPR). Boudhanath and Swayambhunath usually cost about $4 (400–600 NPR). Always carry local currency (NPR), as many ticket booths do not accept credit cards or foreign denominations. SAARC country citizens are eligible for significantly discounted “SAARC rates.”

Raju was efficient and helpful in booking our helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu and our flight onto Pokhara. He was there in the morning to escort us and to carry a pack up to the helicopter pad. The flight was delayed, but he waited with us and was in contact with the company, checking on when the flight would arrive.

We decided to fly by helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu. This avoided having to walk to Lukla and then having a long bumpy ride from Ramechhap airport back into Kathmandu. Also then we could get a flight from Kathmandu airport to Pokhara. All the arrangements were made by Easy Flight Travel. We were escorted up to the helipad and helped into the helicopter. I would definitely recommend Easy Flight Travel to anyone wanting to organise travel from Namche Bazaar
