FAQ

The Gokyo Valley Trek with Helicopter Return is a popular Everest region adventure that combines trekking through the stunning Gokyo Valley with a scenic helicopter flight back to Kathmandu. Instead of trekking back the same route, trekkers enjoy an aerial view of Everest, Gokyo Lakes, and surrounding Himalayan peaks. This option is ideal for travelers who want to save time, avoid retracing steps, and experience both trekking and a thrilling helicopter ride in one unforgettable journey.

The trek is considered moderately challenging. It involves daily walks of 5–7 hours at high altitude, reaching up to 5,357 meters at Gokyo Ri. Proper acclimatization is necessary to reduce altitude sickness risk. The helicopter return reduces overall physical strain because trekkers do not need to descend on foot.

Basic fitness, stamina, and some previous hiking experience are helpful, but beginners with good preparation can also complete this trek successfully.

Typically, the trek lasts around 10 to 12 days. The journey includes flights to Lukla, trekking through Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo, with acclimatization days included. After exploring Gokyo Lakes and hiking Gokyo Ri, a helicopter flight returns you to Kathmandu.

The helicopter option shortens the overall itinerary compared to the classic round-trip trek, making it ideal for travelers with limited time.

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are spectacular. Temperatures are moderate, and the trails are lively with trekkers. Winter is possible but very cold, while the monsoon season brings rain and limited visibility. For the best helicopter flight views, clear weather seasons are highly recommended.

Trekkers need a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits are mandatory for entering the Everest region. Your trekking agency typically arranges these permits in advance. It is important to carry your permits during the trek as they are checked at multiple checkpoints along the trail.

Yes, altitude sickness can be a concern because the trek reaches over 5,000 meters. Proper acclimatization days, slow ascent, hydration, and listening to your guide are essential. Symptoms like headache, nausea, and dizziness should not be ignored. The itinerary is designed to help your body adapt gradually.

In serious cases, descending quickly is necessary, and the helicopter option can provide rapid evacuation if needed.

Major highlights include the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, panoramic sunrise views from Gokyo Ri 5357m, Ngozumpa Glacier (the largest glacier in Nepal), and stunning views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The region is less crowded than the Everest Base Camp route, offering peaceful trails and authentic Sherpa culture. The helicopter return adds a dramatic aerial perspective of the Himalayas.

Accommodation is mainly in tea houses or mountain lodges. Rooms are simple but comfortable, usually twin-sharing with shared bathrooms. Dining halls are warm and serve Nepali and international meals such as dal bhat, noodles, soups, and pancakes. While facilities are basic at higher altitudes, they are clean and welcoming. In Namche Bazaar, lodges are more modern with better amenities.

The cost varies depending on group size, services included, and helicopter sharing options. On average, it ranges from $2,000 to $3,500 per person. The price typically includes domestic flights, permits, accommodation, meals during the trek, guide, porter, and helicopter return.

Private helicopter charters cost more than shared flights. It’s recommended to confirm what is included before booking.

Choosing a helicopter return saves several trekking days and prevents retracing the same trail. It reduces physical exhaustion and offers spectacular aerial views of the Everest region. The helicopter flight provides a unique perspective of glaciers, peaks, and valleys that cannot be seen from the ground.

It is perfect for travelers seeking comfort, luxury, time efficiency, and an unforgettable grand finale to their Himalayan adventure.

Jan

Raju was efficient and helpful in booking our helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu and our flight onto Pokhara. He was there in the morning to escort us and to carry a pack up to the helicopter pad. The flight was delayed, but he waited with us and was in contact with the company, checking on when the flight would arrive.

We decided to fly by helicopter from Namche Bazaar to Kathmandu. This avoided having to walk to Lukla and then having a long bumpy ride from Ramechhap airport back into Kathmandu. Also then we could get a flight from Kathmandu airport to Pokhara. All the arrangements were made by Easy Flight Travel. We were escorted up to the helipad and helped into the helicopter. I would definitely recommend Easy Flight Travel to anyone wanting to organise travel from Namche Bazaar
